The Journey of 'Alfred': Looking Through the Scores
Wednesday 30 August, 1pm - 2pm, free admission (please book in advance)
Treasures of the Brotherton, University of Leeds, LS2 9JT
As with many operas from the 18th Century, musicologists, conductors and editors must look through several contemporary sources to piece together a full score for performance.
The University of Leeds Library Special Collections is home to three early printed editions of ‘Alfred’, comprising editions printed in 1740, 1751, and 1757.
Join Dr Bryan White and David Ward for a look at how opera scores were produced in the 18th century, who were buying (and playing) them, and why these three scores of 'Alfred' differ so much (and what this means for us performing the opera today).
