25 August 2018, 1pm

(La Princesse Jaune)

Music by Camille Saint-Saëns

Libretto by Louis Gallet

Sung in French with English subtitles

Running time: 45 minutes

Obsessed with Japan and the image of a Japanese girl on his bedroom cabinet, Kornelis begins to live his life lost in the grip of fantasy and drug-induced dreams - much to the growing distress of Lena, who has long loved Kornelis in secret ...

Saint-Saëns' dark and dramatic short opera explores the deep fascination that 19th Century audiences had with the far East.

Through a beautiful and sweeping score, we follow the troubled relationship of Kornelis and Lena, as he is consumed by dreams of Japan and she fights to bring him back to reality.

Rarely heard today, don't miss this opportunity to experience 'The Yellow Princess' performed by John Porter and Natalie Johnson-Hyde.
