Blaise Malaba

Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Blaise Malaba studied International Economic Relations in 2012 at the Ivan Franco National University of Lviv, Ukraine. He started vocal training there with the Ukrainian baritone Orest Sydyr followed by Professor Bogdan Bazylykut. In 2018 he received an MA in Opera Performance from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, where he studied with Donald Maxwell and Michael Pollock. His studies at the RWCMD were supported by The Leverhulme Trust scholarship, The Waterloo foundation, The Rajeswari Schorlaship, The Alan Rogers Scholarship and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation. He is also the recipient of the Independent Opera Voice Fellowship 2018 and Opera Award Foundation bursary 2018. In 2015, he was finalist in the BBC Cardiff Singer of World competition and won the first prize in the Impreza International Vocal Competition, Ukraine. For the 2019/20 season he joins the Jette Parker as a link artist at Royal Opera House.


Operatic repertoire includes Sarastro DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE, Don Magnifico LA CENERENTOLA, Don Basilio IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA, Sparafucile and Monterone RIGOLETTO, Luka THE BEAR, Gremin EUGENE ONEGIN, Der Tod DER KAISER VON ATLANTIS and Simone GIANNI SCHICCHI for companies including L’viv National Opera, Ukraine and RWCMD.


Engagements in 2018/19 season include covering Frazier PORGY AND BESS for English National Opera, Samuel in the young artist production of UN BALLO IN MASCHERA for Opera Holland Park, Alidoro LA CENERENTOLA for West Green House Opera and Friar in Stanford’s MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING for Northern Opera Group. Future plans include Second Elder in SUSANNA at Linbury Theatre, Covent Garden a return to Opera Holland Park for Sparafucile RIGOLETTO, the Jette Parker Young Artist opera showcase at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and cover Fotis THE GREEK PASSION for Opera North.
