Jake Muffett
Jake Muffett was born in Grantham, Lincolnshire where he attended The King’s School Grantham. He graduated from the University of York and subsequently the Guildhall School of Music and Drama before completing the school’s opera programme under Dominic Wheeler and Martin Lloyd-Evans in 2018. Jake receives vocal tuition from John Evans. In June 2019 Jake completed the young artist programme at the National Opera Studio in London.
Jake was a member of the Glyndebourne Festival Chorus for the 2016 season, covering the role of Fiorello in Il barbiere di Siviglia and performing a principle role in Glyndebourne Youth Opera’s production of Lewis Murphy’s A Garden Dream. Jake returned for the 2018 Glyndebourne Festival as a Jerwood young artist. During the 2018 festival Jake performed the role of the Official Registrar in Madama Butterfly. His most recent major operatic roles include the title role in Mozart’s Don Giovanni for British Youth Opera, the role of John Sorrell in Gian-Carlo Menotti’s The Consul and Le Marquis de la Force/ 1st Officer in Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites for the Guildhall School. Jake recently made his international operatic debut in a major role as Mauregato in Opéra de Baugé’s production of Schubert’s Alfonso und Estrella as part of their 2019 season.
Jake’s experience also stretches in the world of musical theatre and he recently (under the direction of Keith Warner and Roland Böer) performed the role of Lt. Barri in Stephen Sondheim’s Passion for the Cantiere Internazionale d’Arte in Montepulciano.
Jake has featured as a soloist at the Royal Albert Hall in London on multiple occasions performing Orff’s Carmina Burana and Handel’s Messiah for conductors such as Bob Chilcott, Ben Parry and Brian Kay. Working with The Monteverdi Choir and Sir John Eliot Gardiner Jake has also appeared as a soloist in major concert venues across Europe including the Berlin Philharmoniker, the Barbican Centre and the Royal Chapel in the Palace of Versailles.
A keen semi-professional clarinettist, Jake still plays with orchestras and chamber groups when the opportunity arises. He has even occasionally been known to appear in musical theatre pit bands playing various woodwind instruments.
