Our Eyes Looking for God

5th & 7th November 2026

An opera. A ghost story. A love story. Black boy joy and Black boy nightmares.

Cousins Adjani and Kamal are driving to a party on Adjani's last night in Toxteth. They laugh, tell stories, clash, dream, and wonder what the future will bring. Two ordinary boys with extraordinary souls, on an ordinary night out that will resonate across history.

Our Eyes Looking for God combines the unique talents of writer/director TD Moyo, composer Renell Shaw, librettist April Koyejo-Audiger, movement director Matheus Daniel, musical director Luke Bacchus and designer Amanda Mascarenhas to create a genre-mashing new opera that sings out the story of young lives rooted in British communities today.

Arriving in Leeds after a sold-out London premiere run, Our Eyes Looking for God is Northern Opera Group's first co-production with the Barbican.

“Our Eyes Looking for God captures the spirit of opera – its fluidity, extremity and larger-than-life gestures”

"The whole production was the most one of a kind, show I’ve ever seen. The performances were raw and captivating and it’s the first time I’ve seen a live band on a work of this scale. Every bit of it, from the movement to the sound, set design and more, complimented each other hugely! Would gladly watch again."

Stephen Odubola, actor

“ It’s hard to find a single word that defines what this incredible theatre event is, exactly…… it is so innovative, and so powerfully itself. Opera, theatre, poetry and dance are woven together to tell the story, and explore the themes that shape it. It is a passionate story of loss and injustice, chronicling the racism inherent in British society as two young black boys, friends from birth, wrangle with each other as they separately struggle to find identity and meaning in their lives. It is sometimes volatile, sometimes tender, often funny and always moving. On a vivid sculptural set, the two actors tell their story, supported and framed by four musicians who brilliantly serve the musical score. I was held in its grip from the first bars, and everyone in it is extraordinary. The choreography by Mateus Daniel is completely thrilling - I have never really seen anything like this. At a dystopian time where theatre and performing arts sometimes struggle for meaning and purpose, this show confidently and eloquently seizes a narrative that so needs to be told and heard. And it does so by using a dazzling range of talent, theatrical imagination and vision. There is an electrifying pulse in this piece - a heartbeat that thrums through the music, the choreography, the dialogue, the whole spirit of it.
A brilliant production by TD Moyo - and the company of insanely talented performers and musicians.
I loved it - and urge everyone to see it who has a chance of doing so.”
